Boxing and MMA: Two Opposing Combat Sports

Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) are two popular and exciting combat sports. Although they both revolve around fighting, they have many important differences. Let's explore the notable differences between Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

1. Basic rules:

  • Boxing: Boxing is a combat sport that uses the fists to strike the opponent's upper body. The main objective is to score points or cause a knockout to win.
  •  MMA: MMA combines many martial arts such as jiu-jitsu, muay thai, judo and wrestling. Competitors can use a variety of techniques including punching, kicking, gripping, and throwing the opponent to the ground.

2. Equipment

  • Boxing: Gloves and mouth guards are the main equipment in boxing. Gloves protect the hands and increase the power of punches.
  • MMA: Equipment includes gloves, mouth guards, and boxing trunks. MMA fighters may also use elbow and knee pads

3. Power to hit opponents:

  • Boxing: In boxing, only strikes to the upper body of the opponent are allowed. The main strikes include the jab (a powerful strike to maintain distance) and the cross (a powerful strike to attack).
  •  MMA: In MMA, fighters are allowed to strike both the upper and lower body of the opponent. Strikes include punches, kicks, and various techniques such as chokes and joint locks.

4. Arena:

  • Boxing: Boxing arenas are usually circular with ropes around them. There are no countdown timers and the referees are usually outside the ring to supervise.
  • MMA: MMA arenas are usually polygonal with nets and iron corners to protect the spectators. MMA matches usually have countdown timers and the referees are inside the ring to manage.

While both boxing and MMA are exciting and challenging, there are many important differences in rules, equipment, striking power, and arenas. This creates diversity and excitement in both sports. And at PTS Kick Fitness, we understand and respect this diversity.

This is the place you can trust to practice both sports, not only because of the professionalism we bring but also because of our passion and commitment to your health and personal development.
